Softube Console 1 Preset
« on: August 13, 2016, 07:29:06 PM »
Hi all,

here is a preset for the Softube Console 1 controller. It actually does what I always wished for my own workflow: controlling the SONAR channel strip modules with hardware knobs, including full parameter feedback. I use it in combination with a Mackie Control.

You can find more Information about Console 1 here (they are currently selling for €599 in Europe):

http://www.softube.com/console1.php

The preset features three different modes (which can be selected with the External sidechain button on the top right Corner):

Track: for controlling channel Strip modules on the currently selected track

Bus: for controlling channel Strip modules on the currently selected track

ACT: for controlling the currently selected plug-in via ACT (check azslow.com for more info on how to setup the plug-ins properly with ACT and avoid the learn function in SONAR). The first 10 rotaries are mapped to the EQ section.

ACT mode is also enabled / disabled automatically when displaying Insert fx 1-3 (and special, see below) by pressing buttons 17-20.

Here is the current knob and button layout:

LEFT section:

Display on: bring up AZcontrol Display
Display Auto: display / hide Inspector
Input Gain: Input Gain
High Cut: EQ Low Pass frequency (ACT mode: R21)
Low Cut: EQ High Pass frequency (ACT mode: R20)
Filters to Compressor: EQ Low Pass on / off (ACT mode: B10)
Phase Inv: EQ High Pass on / off (ACT mode: B9)
Preset: toggle between ACT and Track mode

RIGHT section:

Order: Switch between Bank 1-3
External Sidechain: Switch between Track / Bus / ACT mode
Dupl Track ALL: Tape drive on / off
Dupl Track Group: Tube drive on / off
Drive: Tape drive recording level (ACT mode: R23)
Drive Character: Tube drive level (ACT mode: R22)
Pan: Pan
Volume: Volume
Solo: Solo
Mute: Mute

TOP section:

Pahe down / up: select next / previous track
Button 1-8: ACT Buttons 1-8
Button 9-16: no function currently
Button 17: Display the 1st insert fx of current channel and switch to ACT mode (press again to close and switch back to track mode)
Button 18: Display the 2nd insert fx of current channel and switch to ACT mode (press again to close and switch back to track mode)
Button 19: Display the 3rd insert fx of current channel and switch to ACT mode (press again to close and switch back to track mode)
Button 20: Display a specially defined insert fx (if present) of current channel and switch to ACT mode (press again to close and switch back to track mode). This currently calls the Waves SSL channel Strip.

SHAPE section (PC4K Exp / Gate module):

Shape: Gate on / off (ACT mode: B12)
Gate: Treshold (ACT mode: R18)
Gate Release: Release (ACT mode: R19)
Sustain: Range (ACT mode: R17)
Hard Gate: Gate (expander on / off) (ACT mode: B11)
Punch: Fast Attack (ACT mode: R16)

EQ section (EQ module):

Most controls in EQ section equals EQ module and are self-explanatory, except for these ones:
In ACT mode the rotaries in EQ section are used for Rotary 1-10 (from bottom to top).
Equalizer: Equalizer on / off (ACT mode: B14)
Cut / Bell / Shelf: toggle between bell and shelf mode for band 1 and 4 (ACT mode: B13 / 15)

Compressor section (various compressor modules):

Compressor: Compressor on / off (ACT mode: B16)
Treshold: Treshold (ACT mode: R11)
Ratio: Ratio (ACT mode: R14)
Attack: Attack (ACT mode: R15)
Release: Release (ACT mode: R13)
Parallel Dry/Wet: Dry/Wet (ACT mode: R12)

The preset will be improved over time. For now I hope you enjoy it as much as I do :)

Cheers,
helgenr1

Hi,

attached is version 1.1 of the Softube Console 1 script. Changes:

- Now makes use of Banks (1 and 2) to switch Console 1 Shape section between Gate and AUX 1-4 mode (when in track / bus mode)
- B1-4 now used to turn EQ band 1-4 on/off (when in track / bus mode)
- B5-8 now used to change EQ style (hybrid, pure, etc.) (when in track / bus mode)
- B16 now changes compressor type (PC-76 U-type and S-type) (when in track / bus mode)
- Compressor Parallel dry / wet rotary now controls output of compressor (when in track / bus mode)
- Drive Character in Bank 2 mode now controls Compressor dry / wet (when in track / bus mode)
- minor improvements

How can I attach a word file with actual documentation?

Cheers,
helgenr1

You have better chance to get an answer if you PM the developer (helgenr1).
I do not think people visit my forum often and I was not involved in this preset development.

Hi,

actually there is no easy way of switching between "native Console 1" and AZcontrol mode. I 'm thinking of adding support for the Console 1 plug-in itself in my preset. This would allow controlling Console 1 plug-in with AZcontrol (as long as no ProChannel module is present).

If you don't want to control ProChannel modules or other plug-ins via ACT with Console 1, I think your best bet is to use just Console 1 just with the Console 1 plug-in (without AZcontrol). Since lately Console 1 also allows controlling sends, vol, pan, mute, solo of SONAR (DAW integration). This also gives the advantage of all LEDs working correctly on Console 1 (gain reduction meters, etc.).

If the Console 1 channelstrip wouldn't sound so good (SSL emulation), I would continue to use it with AZcontrol and Pro Channel modules. But Pro Channel sounds no near like Softube channelstrip... so I currently use Console 1 in native mode.

Cheers,
Helge

No way to combine softube native and ACT ?

How do you choose between one mode or another ? (what process ?)
